UCAT Verbal Reasoning: Format and Preparation

Verbal Reasoning is one of the four current UCAT subtests. It assesses the ability to critically evaluate information presented in written form. Applicants should use the official UCAT test-format guidance as the primary source for current requirements.

What the Subtest Involves

The current UCAT format includes 44 Verbal Reasoning questions, with 22 minutes for the subtest after the timed instruction section. Questions involve written information and require careful reading, comparison of statements with the passage and decisions based on the information provided.

A Practical Preparation Routine

Preparation is more useful when practice is reviewed rather than simply repeated. After a short set of questions, identify whether a missed answer came from interpreting the wording, locating information, deciding between statements or managing time.

• Practise small sets of questions before moving to timed sessions.
• Review each missed question and note the reason for the error.
• Use full practice tests nearer the test date to rehearse timed conditions.
