GCSE Biology Edexcel Past Papers & Mark Schemes

GCSE Biology

Edexcel (Specification 1BI0)

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Biology (1BI0) is a linear qualification assessed across two externally-examined papers at the end of Year 11. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 1 hour and 45 minutes long, each worth 50% of the final grade, and are available at both Foundation and Higher tiers. Practising with past papers is one of the most effective ways to familiarise yourself with the exam format, understand the mark scheme, and improve your exam technique.

Exam Tips for Edexcel GCSE Biology

  • Master the Core Practicals: Edexcel's 1BI0 specification includes 8 mandatory core practicals. You must know the methods, variables (independent, dependent, and control), and expected results. Questions on these appear across both papers and form a significant portion of the marks.
  • Learn Key Scientific Vocabulary: Mark schemes are very specific. For 1-4 mark questions, you often only need a few keywords. For example, if asked about the function of chloroplasts, simply writing "photosynthesis" is enough for the mark. Don't waste time writing lengthy paragraphs when concise keywords will do.
  • Nail the 6-Mark Questions: For "apply knowledge" 6-markers, don't forget the basics! Even if the question seems complex, simple points like "less water absorbed" or "less photosynthesis" can earn marks. For "evaluate data" 6-markers, literally "say what you see" in the graph or table, and always provide a balanced judgement backed up with evidence from the data.
  • Practise Microscopy Calculations: These come up regularly on Paper 1. Make sure you are comfortable rearranging the magnification equation (magnification = image size ÷ actual size) and can easily convert between millimetres, micrometres, and nanometres.
