EU Medicine & Dentistry Route

Study medicine in Europe, work as a doctor in the UK

A full honest guide to the EU route into medicine. Taught by a current fifth-year medical student at Vilnius University who knows the route first-hand - what works, what doesn't, and what the trade-offs really are.

Why consider the EU route

A viable route when UK places are limited

🌍

Easier entry

EU medical schools typically have no UCAT requirement and lower entry grades than UK medical schools — while leading to the same end point.

🌐

GMC-recognised

EU medical degrees from EEA member states are recognised by the UK General Medical Council for registration as a doctor in the NHS.

💵

Often cheaper

Tuition fees at EU medical schools are frequently lower than UK-domestic fees — even before accounting for cost of living.

Honest trade-offs

Things we won't gloss over

Is it genuinely recognised in the UK?
Yes — medical degrees from EEA medical schools on the GMC's approved list qualify you to apply for full GMC registration. You will need to pass the UKMLA (UK Medical Licensing Assessment) from 2024 onwards, just like UK graduates do.
What about Brexit?
The GMC still recognises qualifications from EEA medical schools on its approved list. Specific arrangements can change, so we'll always give you the current position when you book a call.
Which universities do you recommend?
Depends on your budget, language preferences, and target specialty. Popular options include Vilnius (Lithuania), Charles University (Czech Republic), Riga Stradins (Latvia), Debrecen (Hungary), and medical schools in Bulgaria and Romania. We'll help you shortlist.
Is it the same quality?
Honestly, varies. Some EU medical schools are excellent, others are weaker. Teaching style tends to be more didactic and less PBL than modern UK schools. Clinical placements vary. We'll give you a frank take on each university rather than the brochure version.
